Ceol
sa Ghleann is
a traditional arts project based in Glencolmcille, County Donegal,
Ireland. It was set up in the early 90ties by the late Donegal fiddler
James Byrne with the specific aim of preserving, promoting and
developing the unique and rich heritage of traditional music, song and
dance of south west Donegal, in particular Glencolmcille’s longstanding
fiddle tradition, through a wide and varied programme of classes,
concerts, seminars and workshops throughout the year. The group
also organise two annual events that have a burgeoning reputation and
have established themselves on the festival calendar:
Feile
Ealaion Traidisiunta Ghleann Cholm Cille held annually during the Easter Holidays
Scoil Samraidh Fidilereacht James Byrne Fiddle Summer
School held annually in late July.
Carrying
on the tradition Ceol sa Ghleann especially
promotes the involvement of young people in traditional
arts to ensure the continuation of traditional music,
song and dance as elements of contemporary Irish culture.
Classes and workshops are well attended by young people
and children from Glencolmcille and surrounding areas.
The organisers see these young people as the bearers
of tradition for future generations.
