Scoil Samhraidh James Byrne
is a Donegal Fiddle Summer School commemorating the late Donegal fiddler James Byrne from Min na Croise, Glencolmcille.
James
had an unequalled repertoire and knowledge of the local
tradition and dedicated his life to playing the tunes and telling
the stories passed down to him by the older generation of
musicians
including his father John and many great fiddlers from Glencolmcille
and beyond. His style and tone of playing and his command of the
instrument were exceptional and people travelled from near and far to
learn from James and hear him play. James
was always happy to welcome visitors to his home and his genuine
friendless and warm personality touched everyone who met him.
Over the years countless musicians including some of todays most
well-known trad performers sat in his kitchen drinking tea
and
learning tunes from hi. His legacy is being continued by
his
family and friends and the many young players he taught and inspired.
Come and experience the life and music
of James Byrne at the annual fiddle summer school hosted by his family on their farm in Min a Croise.
For
one week each summer loacal and visiting musicians gather in Meenacross
where in the past on little more than a 1/2 mile there was an
abundance of great fiddlers including John Phadaí Chonchobhair, Condaí
mcGinley, Paddy Dhonail Gillespie, John Byrne, and Paddy Hiúdaí Byrne a
second cousin to James Byrne. During the week, small and intimate
classes are held daily in Teach James Byrne and other venues in the
neighbourhood with self-catering accomodation available in nearby
cottages.
Some of the finest and most revered Donegal
fiddlers
have performed and taught workshops at the summer school over the
years including Tommy Peoples, Jimmy, Peter and Vincent Campbell and
Danny Meehan amongst others.

Come and join us this summer in Glencolmcille
Sunday 17 - Saturday 23 July 2011.
